Earthquaker Devices

We inspire a lifetime of musical adventures for all sonic explorers.

Do you like effects pedals? We do! Here at EarthQuaker Devices, we like pedals so much that we make them one-at-a-time, by hand, the hard way, in the idyllic post-apocalyptic wasteland metropolis of Akron, Ohio, USA – where the soldering smoke blocks out the sun, and the fiery Cuyahoga River pumps white-hot liquid magma into the steam engine that powers our great riff factory in the sky.

Hand-built amplifiers, effects and guitars. Yesterday’s technology… today!

“The best way to describe the tone of a Satellite amp is it’s like an extended middle finger coming right at your face.” – Dennis Casey, Flogging Molly

BilT Guitars have been making custom electric guitars by hand in Des Moines, Iowa since 2009. We are a small company. Every crafted guitar is made by manually using the sense of touch, not only to guide, but also as a wielded hand tool. If it’s not quite clear, we build handmade electric guitars right here in Des Moines, Iowa USA! We love guitars, we love music made with guitars, we love our guitars making music.

Fender Custom Shop Master Builders are a small group of elite luthiers at Fender who handcraft unique, high-end guitars from start to finish. These Masterbuilt instruments are considered the pinnacle of Fender craftsmanship, created with unique features and signed by the specific builder. While other Custom Shop guitars are built by a team, Masterbuilt models are the work of a single artisan who may also be an artist’s personal builder, or who designs their own limited editions.

Keeley Electronics started with one man – RK himself – at a kitchen table, and grew through garages, storage units and makeshift workspaces to our modern, cutting-edge facility. We’ve been making and modding effects for nearly a quarter-century, feverishly chasing down tones, pushing boards, amps and earballs to their limits, streamlining our operation and constantly refining our pedals.

We’re a group of pedal makers in Minneapolis. And Amsterdam. Our first pedal, Warped Vinyl, was an analog vibrato with a digital brain. The idea was to match the quality and character of analog processing with the anything-goes flexibility of digital control. We make digital circuits now too, but the approach is the same: Offer new and deeply personal ways to interact with effects.

The ‘Tone Quest Call’ is a conversation I have for every build. It’s my way of discussing guitar tone, helping you articulate the sounds you hear in your head and make them into a guitar. In my approach, once we understand the guitar tone you’re after, refining the specs to achieve it becomes the easy part.

Fellows Guitars

Built from scratch in Carthage, MO. A project to try build a new guitar led to a new hobby, which somewhere along the way became a passion.
I want to share that passion with you. I want to obsess over every little detail because in a strange way, I draw satisfaction from the pure process of obsessively creating. I want to create instruments that inspire their players to create music in the same way.

I love making my clients’ dream instrument become a reality, even when this pushes me out of my comfort zone. I also love making my own ideas and designs come to fruition. I love building very close replica/copies of beloved vintage guitars — but I also get a lot of joy exploring new ideas and designs. I don’t want to pursue novelty for the sake of being novel, though. One of my shorthand phrases I like to use as a builder/designer is “Modern design without abandoning vintage sensibilities”.

Electronic Audio Experiments is an exploration in sound and texture via electronics. Founded in 2015 by guitarist and electrical engineer John Snyder, EAE focuses primarily on stompboxes for electric guitar and bass, with occasional ventures into amplification and synthesis. Our products are imagined and assembled in a small workshop in Boston, MA by a close-knit team with strong ties to the world of audio. We offer a mix of unique, purpose-built designs and homages to forgotten circuits of the past—all engineered to exceed our high standards of quality and enrich the sounds of scrappy touring bands and discerning studio artists alike.

Baltimore Sonic Research Institute was founded by accident. In 2019 I was about to go record an album with my band No Note at Kevin Bernsten’s Developing Nations recording studio and I realized I didn’t have a a pedal I needed for tracking bass parts – a massive crushing fuzz. That record had a lot of slow doomy parts and I wanted something that would sound brutal without resorting to the usual suspects. So, rather than go and buy a handful of pedals in hopes that one would give me what I wanted, I decided to build the pedal I needed in the few weeks before the sessions. It ended up being a heavily modified Super Fuzz with an active EQ, full range blend, and a really angry octave tone. When it came time to track the bass, I played a few notes with the fuzz and Kevin said, “yeah I’m going to need one of those.” That pedal evolved into the FZZ and Baltimore Sonic Research Institute was born. Well, it took a bit to get to that name. The version on the prototype was a bit long-winded.

Sam Evans started Cardinal Instruments in 2007 focusing on local woods (both new and reclaimed), locally machined custom hardware, and pickups wound in-house. With each model focusing on a core group of woods and specifications, his desired results are consistent and repeatable. Sam’s decades of experience as a builder and a player have enabled him to create instruments that transcend his unique aesthetic. The reclaimed or salvaged Old Growth Redwood used at Grez Guitars are from first growth trees often 800+ years old. This reclaimed wood is sourced from deconstructed or rehabilitated structures such as train tunnels, wine barrels, water vessels, vinegar tanks, barns and factories. Using reclaimed wood produces exceptional solid, semi-hollowbody and acoustic guitars that are surprisingly light weight, acoustically vibrant and as uniquely beautiful.

MADA is design. MADA is handicrafts for artists.
It is not a replica of the 3-millionth Les Paul or Telecaster that is built here. MADA guitars are unique and not copies. Centuries of tradition and development form the foundation and inspiration for our instruments, upon which MADA is built. New uses for local woods and materials are being developed. Wood from storm and drought damage in Vienna and the surrounding area is carefully cut and dried. These sustainable resources create a new look that, with a wink, still recalls and connects to many traditions.

El Cabron™ Guitars was created by Mike Eldred who is a highly respected figure in the music industry with a career closing in on a 40 year span. Mike started building guitars at Charvel Manufacturing in the 1977 as Grover Jackson’s first hired employee laying the groundwork for one of the most fascinating careers in the musical instrument business.

Through a long series of good and bad decisions in my 20s and 30s, I found myself with the skill set of a Guitar Builder. Luthier if you’re trying to impress someone at a party. I’ve spent a good long time fixing guitars. I’ve spent almost as long building them. When I couldn’t afford the vintage Harmony I was drooling over years and years ago; I decided to try and build my own take on it. That’s how this whole damn fool dream started. I have a lot of fun putting these things together. I sure hope it shows. Maybe it’ll rub off on you too.

I want to inspire players to connect with the instrument in a way that draws them towards creating their own signature playing style and tone. The best way to do that is with a guitar that is custom made. Combine that customization with a dialed in neck and a resonant, articulate vintage-style tone, and you get something very special. Add in beautifully rolled fretboard edges and meticulously filed and polished frets featuring smooth, soft hemispherically shaped ends — you’ll fall in love with your Slusser guitar all over again every time you pick it up.

I’m interested in expanding the materials and techniques of guitar design. I love to use woods that are overlooked by most large builders. Some are common species like cherry and walnut, but I also use ornamental and native timbers grown in San Diego and greater southern California. I use laser cutting, 3d printing, water jet, and die-cutting to create unique design elements you can’t get anywhere else. Life is too short for boring plastic. Everything on a guitar is an opportunity for expression, and technology enables small builders like me to be more creative than ever.

R2R Electric was founded by Chris Vincent in 2019, out of a love for vintage guitars, amplifiers, and effects. Each effect that is built maintains the overall aesthetic and tone that R2R Electric is known for, but accomplishes it in a slightly different way. This highly-curated process makes every unit distinct and unique. No two R2R effects are identical, but they all have the same tone and vibe that has gained the attention of many of today’s hottest players and collectors.

Non-Human Audio pedals are built by hand by one person in Albuquerque, NM. All enclosures are finished by hand to give every pedal a unique look. While the circuits and sounds are consistent, every NHA pedal is one of a kind. I want my pedals to be something special for the people that buy them. It may sound pretentious but I see the process of building a pedal from the ground up with my hands from the same perspective as building furniture, or painting. Taking my time throughout the process and giving each one my personal touch is important.

I am very selective and specific in how many guitars I build each year. The reason for this is that the quality, detail and craftsmanship are critically important to me. Every guitar is unique by selecting only the highest grade tone woods, finishes, and hardware.

First with DIY projects and now with a line of production pedals, Mask Audio Electronics is my expression of the love of the collision between electronics and sound. I make the things I want to see out in the world and find those who share the love of fuzz and noise. Thanks, Alec Breslow
